Structured doodling

In addition to shooting babies and assisting ladies, I will be leading workshops Sunday afternoons at the art center for the next few weeks. We will be making holiday cards, boxes, gifts and decorations. Or, participants can just glue stuff together for the fun of it without focusing on specific outcomes. We'll see what happens when we mix the ingredients.

At this juncture

Busy, busy. In anticipation of the gallery show looming, I have been spray painting some old wooden frames with black semi-gloss. It may be the cheapest to spray paint matts rather than have new ones cut. Today I centered the succulents and took down the string of light up eyeballs in the front window at the studio house, as I have listed it for sale. There is at least this asset to buffet us in this economic contraction, smudge that it may be. Busy, busy. I think all of the things I have there will fit in the house we live in, but where will I paint? I also asked that my near calendar be filled with day shifts with the elder care company with whom I start tommorrow. Tommorrow. I will assist with my elbows and cups of tea.

bright idea

I have finally installed an actual light fixture in one of my paintings.

Thewall

It has the feel of a kitchen wall in an old hippie house.

Even colder out

I finally got around to the lentil stew.

Sigh of assessment

Hamburger, pie crust, mushroom gravy. It was so nice to hear my new supervisor on the telephone welcoming me to the team! Oh, and several cans of cat food. Tommorrow's mural session has been postponed for a week because of a professional development day. It's really wet, anyway. time to peel some potatos and perhaps cook a lentil stew.

after picking up pennies from the sidewalk

Oh, ho! Today I picked up a couple of shifts with a company providing home care for seniors and others who may need a visiting nurse, medical transport or other assistance with the activities of daily living. I can hardly wait to meet my ladies! It meshes well with afterschool art instruction and shooting babies at the hospital. And, all those commitments interweave with making art and bringing up a mostly well behaved child. If I keep a carefull calendar, by next year I can support graduate school.

where do we turn?

What is that giant lifting sensation? Yesterday Hubby suggested that I start looking into graduate school. The last time I went to graduate school, and we're not talking about my nursing assistantship, I kinda sorta drifted away from it. Even though I earned all "A"s, the study of criminal justice just made me realize how much I disliked the culture of law enforcement. But studio art! Few things sound funner than the giant playpen that is an MFA program! Maybe TU can serve it up with a side of poetry! And teaching credentials!

Items of Interest

It's been a while since I sought out and reflected apon news items concerning my vital interests in beer and goats. But as I scoured the headlines this afternoon I was most distressed to read that a week after a woman moved into a rental in Austin, Minnesota, she found a moaning goat dying in her garage. The goat had apparently been dying in the garage for many weeks, based on an expert's observation on its fur's decay. Perhaps if they had been feeding the goat Biobeer, it may have been saved. Readers of long standing will be reminded that I've always held the opinion that beer will one day redeem the earth by cleaning the soil and restoring peoples' health with bacuums-bacterial vacuum cleaners that convert toxins. Biobeer will work wonders for you and extend your life expectation. But I digress. Who rents a house and garage without a preliminary walk-through?

Shaping up

Today I finally registered myself at the Board of Nursing. I was told at the completion of my course that I had ninety days to do this, but that was not quite accurate. It's done, at any rate. Then I loaded up the car with newspapers, sticks, brushes and almost everything needed for today's mural painting session in Fell's Point. The weather was fine and I passed around some cups of paint. The students were focused, they were on task and painted in the lines. There was some paint mixing and the lesson of secondary colors. The director of our program came out to document the project. I have a feeling that pictures of this event will land in some governmental powerpoint presentation somewhere down the road. I hope so. Not so much for me and my artistic ambitions, but so that more of these lessons get funded. What I really love is that while this session is targeted towards fourth and fifth graders, one afterschool coach brought forward a kindergarden student who was eager to paint in some feet. We should finish up next week...it looks really nice.

Another day

This afternoon a friend of ours called me up in a tizzy because he could not find his car keys and none of the cabs he called had bothered to drive up the hill on which his house is hidden. He needed to drive to his office downtown to pick up his spares so he could come back and take his car to the airport for a flight to Texas and could he borrow my car? All this was sounding awfully complicated and I wanted to attend another friend's gallery opening this evening, but of course he's done us so many favors that I immediately located my keys and bolted. After all, who could I call from jail if Hubby were, um, indisposed, eh? I was getting over my trepidation about his slick leaf covered hill and the thought of lending out my beloved yuppie pig mobile, even though his is much fancier as I watched him adjust the driver's seat. I took a deep breath and turned away. As I looked at a million orange leaves on the ground I saw part of a small blue and white enameled circle hidden near the curb. AH! Our frazzled friend was so grateful that his key was found, I didn't have the heart to tease him. The twelve year old and I made it to a knock-out show on the Main Drag. We nibbled at cookies, cheeses and crackers as we admired the art. Bonus! Another friend of long standing had the rear gallery's show, and her ceramics are a fabulous blend of technique and whimsey. It's good to get out every once in a while.
